Listening
THREE IMPORTANT LISTENING TECHNIQUES
OVER-AMBITIOUS LISTENING: Focus is more on interjecting our own viewpoint than in understanding or exploring someone else’s opinion. We are “hearing” what is being said rather than “listening” to what is being stated. We look for the first opening to interject information about our company and products/services. Sometimes even looking about the room to determine our next move or whom we want to talk to next.
POLITE LISTENING – Focus has some genuine interest in hearing and understanding the other person’s point of view. We think we understood the other person’s information, however we don’t participate in the conversation by asking questions and/or clarification on a point or two. This can be construed as being polite when it really is showing only minimum attention.
ACTIVE LISTENING – #1 Listening Skill to develop. Focus is “active listening”. We are demonstrating genuine interest in understanding the other person’s viewpoint. We are “actively” checking out our understanding. By restating or paraphrasing what we think we heard back to the sender, we solidify and demonstrate that we were “actively listening”. Our body language is responding to the other person’s comments and/or information. This type of engagement is what distinguishes “active listening” from over-ambitious and polite listening and makes it overwhelming effective.
